Those of you who know me (Marcus) well know that I'll eat anything once. During the Olympics in Beijing, there were several features on the local cuisine, and I vowed to try the most exotic/disgusting foods I could find when we came to China--dried scorpions, sea horses, squid "parts," etc.

Strange looking meat is not difficult to find here via local street vendors, but since no one speaks English, it's impossible to know what I'm eating. (Although I did recognize pig's snout and pickled chicken feet.) And if I can't document what I've eaten, what's the point, right?

We're going out with our guide in a couple hours, so hopefully she can translate for me and I can get ahold of something really nasty, because it's time that I take this thing to the next level. I'll try to take pictures also.

Here's what I've eaten so far: roasted pig knuckle (very chewy and awful), braised ox tail (not too bad), braised duck with vegetables (decent), and roasted duck breast (pretty tasty). There's a lot of "braising" going on around here. Apparently the process transforms nearly anything into being suitable for public consumption.

  1. Marcus, all I can say is that I hope you packed some Pepto and Imodium. :)

  3. I can't wait to hear what you get your hands on! This is, after all, a once in a lifetime opportunity to try some new foods. We ain't in Jasper, anymore, baby. A gal I worked with in Greenville ate ox tails all the time. She said they used to be really cheap at the butcher since no one wanted them- now are considered a delicacy by some. Have fun! Hope it doesn't burn on the way out.

  6. hmmm...I think I would become skinny in China...

Good to hear that y'all get to experience part of the culture in China.

I love the previous pic you have of Gift holding and playing with Ivy. They are going to have so much fun with each other.

  7. This brings back many memories of your childhood. I compared one of my grandchildren to you and Jason just yesterday. I, myself, would not be able to even look at such delicacies.
